Spring madness and the return of Snake Girl!

I have been rather busy lately as I have been madly creating new characters and new versions of the old characters. It has been somewhat of a creative couple of weeks and I have any more characters on their way. But for now I would like to introduce you to someone.  Within my walls a new character has emerged,  but before casting your eyes upon her I must advise you to try and not look into her eyes.  You have been warned…….

Come now, come closer for behind this curtain
I can say and be very certain

That within this tent is such a horror, a fright!
But don’t worry as she very rarely bites

Lilith the Snake Girl will charm and seduce
But beware if she offers her delectable fruit

To take a bite of the ruby red apple
Will leave you insane and permanently shackled!

For Lilith personifies darkness and delight
But you would be a fool to think that tonight is your night………….

Not only that I would like to reintroduce you to Bedlam the Bunny and Mr Boo. These circus asylum characters have a brand new act . So Ladies and Gentleman behold and see, the greatest act on springs, Bedlam the bunny and Mr Boo……

video

Bedlam the Bunny
Does not find it funny
As he suffers from social anxiety

To meet other bunnies
Becomes such a worry
What will they think of me?

His heart starts to pound
When other bunnies are around
His head starts to spin and thump

He blushes and splutters
And can only utter
Oh dear everyone is staring at me

This social phobia
Did I also mention Leporiphobia?
Just builds up his anxiety

A medical disorder
Turns you into a social avoider
It is not shyness he suffers from you see

A familiar face Mr Boo! Now on a spring.....

Lavender the Rat

 Hello Strawberry Bon Bons

I was very lucky recently to have a commission based on a rat who lived in a abandoned asylum. I was really excited about this project as I quite like derelict buildings (no surprise) and have a huge soft spot for rats.

When I was thirteen (many many years ago) I had a rat who I named Rosetta. She had brown fur, pink tail and ears and had such cute face. I had not realised until at that point how intelligent and characterful rats are. She was beautiful.

Rosetta The Rat

Pictures taken before the digital age…where you would hope the picture you had taken would be ok when it was developed. If not it would be blurry, with a thumb over the lens and would therefore would end up with a sticker on it.

It is a huge complement when some one asks you to do a commission as there are many creative and talented artists out there. Another side to commissions which I enjoy is the ideas people can have. Sometimes you can get in a stagnant creative bubble and need a kick up the bottom so to speak. So with a combination of both of our ideas we came up Lavender (who my buyer named ). So I would like to present to you Lavender the Rat and here is her story.

Lavender the Rat tip toes along the old abandoned asylum. She peers through the broken window and sniffs the cool night air. Dressed in a strait jacket very much like the ghostly inmates, she rearranges her ribbons the creeps further along the ward until she finds the doll. The doll lays broken amongst the rubble with one glassy eye staring out. Lavender moves further until she is in a large entrance hall with the moonlight peering through the open front door. Twitching her whiskers she prepares to welcome the next inmate in the asylum. She has been expecting you……

I have really enjoyed creating Lavender, and she has now gone to a very good home. I rather like the idea that something you create is then set free to find a new home.

Snake Girl and Rusty Metal

Hello hello!

I have been working for the past week on a character who I do not yet have a name for but for now lets call her Snake Girl! Snake Girl is going to feature in the Last Show on Earth a project which is based on all things Apocalypse and circus like. As I was working on her face I kept thinking this is wrong, wrong, wrong.

So I did what any good artist would do and sawed her face off.

Only to be built up again of course.

The reason why it was not working was there was not enough thought into the structure of the face. The idea was to create a hybrid of a girl and a snake, which therefore would create a challenge when thinking about proportions. So what I decided  to merge the eyes and forehead of a snake with the lips and chin of a girl.

The object on her head is going to be an apple. So I am now on the fun part with fabric where I shall be creating her tail. I am still undecided on what colours to do and whether to give her a stripy tail. Should I chose feminine colours such as a soft pink that will juxtapose with the fact she is a hybrid? I am tempted to a soft green for the skin and pink for the tail. We shall see. I have also been working on some more characters.

I have also decided that I need to be a bit more organised in my work space. I would guess that a fair few artists are complete Magpies when it come to collecting objects for their work. From collecting bits of driftwood on the beach, to what I like to do is find rusty bits of metal. You just don’t know when you are going to need rusty metal, trust me.

You have to question ones sanity when you have a box just for eyeballs,

Mr Boo

Hello fruit pastels,

I have finally finished a character that is rather special to me. In fact he is as special as Bedlam the Bunny, a Bunny I created a couple of years ago. Mr Boo has rather unexpectantly turned out to be a rather personal project and there is a lot of meaning within the work. Parting will be such sweet sorrow but I have unleashed him on Etsy.

So presenting a brand new act from the circus….drum roll……..broken trumpets….. here is Mr Boo………

Mr Boo the boxed bound clown

Nobody really sees him around

He’s normally hiding inside the box

Listening to the clock’s tick tock

Sometimes it really is quite profound

How do you end up living housebound?

Better off staying indoors you see

Its not much fun having anxiety.

Decorate your home with apocalyptic circus kitsch horror theme.

As the weather has been rather cold (an understatement) recently I have been feeling more home orientated. Therefore it has meant that I have been moving things around the home and reorganising. Beneath all the apocalyptic madness within my mind and work I have a huge soft spot for kitsch. My name is Sarah and I am addicted to kitsch. There I have said it. My aim in life is to have a house that resembles the inside of an apocalyptic chaotic circus with a bit of gothic horror, a flourish of a fairground topped off with a bit of kitsch. So as you may of guessed places like John Lewis and Ikea don’t really cater for apocalyptic circus kitsch horror. If they did I would be so there with my trolley. So when looking for a curtain for our newly painted bathroom I had a bit of a problem. The solution was to have a go at making a curtain. So I did and here is what I made.

The plastic bat. The epitome of good taste.

I am going to make more kitschy curtains, the more theatrical the better! Our cats have also discovered that curtains are rather good fun to climb up on, but getting down is rather problematic. I am also addicted to fairy lights. So I decided that fairy lights around the sofa is a must with the tropical palm trees.

The cat corner in which our rather fluffy cat called Alice sleeps.

I have also been pondering on how we are going to redecorate our kitchen on a super tiny budget. So whilst looking around I found this blog. I love these ideas.

Arty wise, I have finally have an name for a character that I have been working on.  His name is Mr Boo, and I have to say I have grown quite attached to him. Here he is amongst my work space. He will be going on Etsy soon, with a short poem.

If anyone does know where to find a shop in the style of  apocalyptic circus kitsch horror then please contact me. And remember embrace the kitsch, embrace the horror, embrace the circus,  or I shall send a couple of my clowns around to decorate your house….

Sarah

The Snow Apocalypse

For some reason whenever we have snow in the UK suddenly everything comes to a stand still. Yesterday people in supermarkets were madly stocking up on food like there was an apocalypse coming, panic was setting in and trolley rage took over. So being someone who dislikes the cold and crowds of people who are behaving with exceedingly bad manners I am staying in until this madness is over. Here is what our garden looks like.

I also found lots of foot prints left by a fox.

So last night whilst it was snowing I continued with a clown that I had started many months ago and rather sadly neglected. He is nearly finished, I am now trying to think of a name and a story. I have now added bright red  hair as I am quite partial to bright hair. I have had bright red hair myself but it is  purple at the moment. Soon to be pink or blue/purple? I cannot make up my mind. Anyway I have slightly gone slightly off topic.  Ok I am going to go more off topic and declare I love this colour, but I don’t think my hair could handle the amount of bleach.

I want this hair colour

I think we all feel like this sometimes………..

In other news one of the great things about the internet is the ability as an artist to try and reach out to an audience that you hope may like your work. The other bonus is that you see some pretty spectacular work from other artists. I am quite partial to using paper mache on my work, as it comes from a long tradition in theatre and it is a medium I like working with. In my travels I found this artist, and I think this work is beautiful!

Merveille en papier

Seriously beautiful!
